Today we had to say goodbye to Flagstaff. After the breakfast we packed our bags and went off; a very long trip to Moab lay before us. We made a first stop at the Cameron Trading Post, a famous place on the way to Grand Canyon. Of course we found some souvenirs again…
Then we went on, we had to drive a long section through Indian reservations. Fascinating again – how fast the landscape was changing, one moment totally sparse, only desert with only very few light green spots, some miles later vivid green with small trees, and the next moment sandstone in a great variety of colors and far away snow-covered mountains. First one had a very far view, the land was totally plain, then it became hilly, the hills nearly stood on the road. So we followed the road up to Kayenta, where we took the junction to Monument Valley. These buttes are giving a really amazing view, just standing there in the middle of nowhere, well-known from a lot of movies.
Some miles later, the landscape was changing as rapidly as before, and we hit highway 191 which should lead us to today’s destination. This part took another 2 hours, during which one or the other of our party had problems to keep the eyes opened. No – of course this isn’t valid for today’s driver!
Finally Moab came into sight – we had nearly managed it. Just needed to find our motel, the Bowen Motel, then this trip was over. And there it was – and again we were surprised in a positive manner. It looked very well from the outside, and that impression was confirmed with the rooms.
After some minutes for rest we took a little walk through the city, had a look at several restaurants – we were somehow hungry after that long trip. At the end we stopped at the Moab Diner and had an American style dinner, all enjoyed their meals. On the way back to the motel we bought some postcards in the Moab Trading Post yet.
Then the elder ones took another walk to get something to drink, and so the day could be finished with a sip of beer or some mixed drink.
